Top Ten Carnivals in the world

Carnival refers to a festival which involves a public celebration or parade combined with few elements of a circus. During various carnivals around the world people dress up or wear custumes and celebrate in the streets of their respective town. Here is a list of top ten carnivals in the world.

1. Trinidad

Trinidad’s carnival is the annual festival celebrated on Monday and Tuesday before Ash Wednesday. This Carnival is celebrated in Trinidad and Tobago and other cities of the world such as Rio de Janeiro, Toronto, Miami, Notting hill in London and New York City. This festival started by the Settler and African Slaves and paid their respect to the African mythology and music. This festival is going to happen on 17th to 22nd of February in 2012.

2. Olinda, Brazil

Olinda is considered to be the best carnival in all of Brazil as the region of Pernambuco has its own type of music, instruments, and people carry colorful umbrellas during the festival and dance on the streets. This festival is more of an African theme unlike the Rio Carnival. The festival generally starts on 17th of February and ends on 22nd of February. But it can also start quite early in December in Olinda and other cities near Olinda.

3. Rio Carnival

Rio Carnival is Carnival that takes place in Rio de Janeiro and even people from cities like Ipanema, Copacabana come to join the Carnival. Every single street in the city is packed with samba schools and you can hear the sound of the drums everywhere.  This Carnival will start on 17th of February and it will end on 22nd February 2012.

4. Oruro

Oruro Carnival is one of the biggest there is. There is going to be about 600,000 people roaming in the streets of the city with hundreds of traditional Bolivian bands, dancers. The parade of Oruro Carnival is led by San Miguel and he is followed by other devils. The parade eventually reaches the soccer stadium. There also many farmers and miners who offer the fruit of their labour to the Carnival. The festival is going to start on 17th and it will continue until 22nd of February.

5. Notting Hill

Notting hill Carnival takes place in North London and it is considered to be world’s second biggest festival. This carnival attracts a crowd of about a million as tourists and watcher and 60,000 people as performers.  During the festival there are 5 different types of music being played. That includes Calypso, Steel pan, Mas, Static and Mobile system. The Carnival will begin on 27th of August 2012.

6. Santa Cruz de Tenerife Carnival

This festival was banned once in Spain and it is one of the biggest festivals in the world. This carnival hits the streets after midnight. This Carnival starts with the opening parade and election of the Carnival Queen. The Carnival will begin on 17th of February and it will end on 26th of February 2012.

7. Goa Carnival

The concept of having a carnival was introduced to Goa by the Portuguese who ruled over Goa for nearly 400 years.  This is why Goa is the only place in all of India where they hold this Carnival. This Carnival in Goa attracts thousands of visitors every year. The carnival will begin on the 18th of February and it will end on 21st of February 2012.

8. Brooklyn Carnival

The carnival that takes place in Brooklyn is actually the West Indies Carnival and it starts at 11 am at Utica Avenue and the parade goes to Grand Army Plaza. This festival will begin on September 3rd 2012. This carnival attracts nearly millions of people and it is considered as New York’s biggest outdoor event.

9. Barranquilla Columbia

This festival has both elements of European, African and Indian traditions. This festival is considered to be the master piece of partying. The Carnival is going to take place this year on 18th February and it will continue till 21st February 2012.

10. Mardi Gras in New Orleans

This Festival is originally a French fertility ritual. There are no records of any women attending this festival which means the festival was beadles. The festival will start on 21st February 2012.
