Sea Forts in Maharashtra

It was certainly because of the greatest King of the 16th and 17th century in Maharashtra, The great Maratha King Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, that people in different parts of Maharashtra speak the their tradition language. The Marathi culture in the current would not be the way it is now if Shivaji Maharaj had not realized the significance of capturing or constructing strong forts and castles in various parts of Maharashtra. There are numerous forts all around Maharashtra but in this article we are only discussing forts that are located on the coastline of Maharashtra. This refers to the Sea Forts (Jal Durg) in Maharashtra. Here is a list of Sea Forts in Maharashtra: –

Kolaba Fort

Also known as Kulaba Fort, Kolaba fort is a military fort located in the sea at about 2 km away from the Shores of Alibag beach. Alibag is situated in Konkan region, Maharashtra at a distance of 35 km away from Mumbai.

After south Konkan came under the command of Shivaji Maharaj, he decided to fortify the Kolaba fort in the year 1662 and made it one of his main naval stations. Kolaba is often described as a fort built on a rock on an island. There is sweet water well located in this fort as well many temples and Guns that face the sea. They were made to attack the British ships. At the entrance of the fort you can see carvings of tigers, peacocks and elephants.

How to reach Kolaba Fort, Alibag – Once you make it to Alibag you can reach the fort by walking in the sea or swimming as the water is not very deep but only during the low tide. During high tide it is highly recommended to get a boat ride to reach Kolaba Fort. At the entrance of the fort, there is a small entry fee that is charged for the visitors.

Sindhudurg Fort

Sindhudurg is a fortress located in the Arabian Sea near the coast of Maharashtra in Konkan regions of this state. This fort is hardly one kilometer away from Malavan which is 510 km south of Mumbai. This Fort was built by Shivaji Maharaj in the year 1664. The whole construction of this 48 acres fort with 9.1 m walls took only 3 years even though it is quite unbelievable. Most of the residents of this fort have moved out as there were not many opportunities for employment but there are still few families who are living at Sindhudurg Fort. The families living in the Fort are the soldiers descendants and they have taken farming, fishing and guiding tourists as their occupation.

How to reach Sindhudurg Fort, Sindhudurg – You can get to Sindhudurg town by train or bus and from the town you can get a boat ride to the fort or you can just swim. That’s only during low tides.

Janjira Fort

Janjira Fort is a sea fort located very close to the village of Murud on the Coastline of Maharashtra in Raigadh region and it was mainly occupied by the Siddis. Janjira is the only undefeated fort in the west coast of the country. This has made this fort well known as the strongest marine fort in India. Originally the word Janjira comes from the Arabic word Jazira which means island.

How to reach Murud Janjira – You can get to Murud village by bus or train from Mumbai or Pune. From there you can get a boat ride to the Fort.

 

Vijaydurg Fort

Vijaydurg fort is believed to be the oldest fort on the Sindhudurg coast as its construction started in the year 1193 and ended in 1205. This Fort was captured by Shivaji Maharaj from Adil Shah of Bijapur in the year 1653. Shivaji Maharaj renamed this fort as Vijay Durg. Vijay in Hindi means Victory. Vijay durg Fort consists of a 200m man-made secret tunnel under sea and under land that connects the fort to a palatial house in the village.

How to reach Vijaydurg Fort – Vijaydurg fort is located near Malvan beach. Malvan is one of the beaches on the Sindhudurg region which is south of Maharashtra. One can get to Malvan beach and find accommodation quite easily as it is a tourist place. From Malvan beach it is easy to get to Vijaydurg fort.

Underi Fort – Underi fort is an island which was fortified by the Kahim of the Siddis in the year 1678. Underi Fort is located close to Mumbai harbor and its main purpose was for keeping a watch on the British army.

How to reach Underi Fort – Once you get to Alibag you can hire a boat to get to Underi Fort. This fort is located at about 5 km away and 3 km in the sea.
