Pune Festival- An Extravaganza of Culture

In its earlier days, widely known as the Punyanagari (City of virtue), Pune was just a small dot on the huge map of India, but now Pune has established an identity of its own over the years. Cultural heritage and history of the city takes its roots back to the eighth century in the Rashtrakut Dynasty, but it came into focus when the great Maratha Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj ruled the city and since then the nurturing of the city started to become an educational and cultural hub of the country. Puneri culture has strong blend of Marathi heritage and history with an amalgamation of music, dance, and drama. History
The Pune festival is a brainchild of Mr Suresh Kalmadi invented with a vision of creating a pinnacle of culture, sports, education and technology. The Pune festival was started in 1989 and then the history was created in cultural world by stepping a foot forward with diversified view of including several kind of talents under one umbrella of Pune Festival. The strong support from people and sudden recognition in the world of culture, art, music, and sports made the bond of Pune city with the festival much stronger.

The Pune festival is organized by the Pune festival Committee along with people of Pune, Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC) and Tourism Department of Indian Government. The Pune Festival has a great cultural blend of Ganesh Festival as it is organized during the same period as the Ganesh Festival.

Pune festival holds higher magnitude and great caliber and is the only one such fest in the country which is being organized for the longest period of time. The Pride of Pune, Pune festival became an institution of its own, performing artists around the country, various sports and cultural event. The cultural celebration of Pune Festival provided a huge platform for various talents and attracted thousands of people which resulted in the construction of Ganesh Kala Krida Manch specifically designed for the organization of Pune Festival.

The festival begins with Ganesh Pratishtapana- by installing lord Ganesha’s idol as it collides with the Ganeshotsav. The cultural journey of the festival begins and continues for about two week with numerous sports, cultural and artistic events. The nationally and internationally renowned artists perform every year in this festival along with the Bollywood’s most celebrated actress Hema Malini’s Bharatnatyam performance.

This year the Pune Festival feautures “Ganesh Vandana’ by Hema Malini and her daughters Esha and Ahana Deol, skit ‘Shivarajyabhishek’ from the dram ‘Janata Raja’ by Babasaheb Purandare any many more performances. The actresses like Urmila Matondkar, Varsha Usgaonkar, Isha Koppikar, Tejaswini Lonari, Shruti Marathe, and Sharvari Jamenis will perform on the ‘Lavani and Kathak’ program which will be choreographed by Nikita Moghe and many more such programs are lined up for the festival this year.
