New version of Internet addresses available in India

New Delhi: Indian Registry for Internet Names and Numbers (IRINN) have issued for the new IP (Internet Protocol) address for India. IPv6 is the next version of IP addresses. This new version will make it easy for the security agencies to spot the internet users.

The internet addresses under the current version IPv4 are limited. It is difficult to identify the end user, as the internet service providers assign the particular IP address to many users.

There are massive numbers of IPv6 addresses available. Therefore it becomes easier to identify the users, if they are using IPv6.

One of the five authorised bodies for issuing Internet addresses, APNIC, has recognized Indian Registry for Internet Names and Numbers (IRINN) for issuing IP addresses in India.

National Internet Exchange of India (NIXI) Chief Executive Govind said that they are issuing IPv6 at up to 60 per cent less than prevailing rates in the ongoing soft launch period. This is done in order to test the compatibility of hardware and software that has to be in place. In next couple of months they will launch industrial grade of IPv6.

In addressing security matters with the help of IPv6, Charia said, “Government will have to ensure that the new equipment and devices that are produced or imported in the country are at least IPv6 enabled.”

Presently there are no import restrictions on devices and the equipments that do not fulfill IPv6 standards
