Movie Review: Aisha

Cast: Sonam Kapoor, Abhay Deol, Ira Dubey, Amrita Puri, Cyrus Sahukar, Arunoday Singh

Director: Rajshree Ojha

USP: Fashion, a bright sunny starcast, fashion, 2 good songs, and did I mention fashion??

‘Aisha’ is a highly indianized version of Jane Austen’s Emma. Set in New Delhi, it does manage to parallel the class hierarchy in society from the book and perhaps if set in any other city, wouldn’t be as convincing. Aisha (Sonam Kapoor) is a rich, spoilt socialite who very typically dabbles in art, animal welfare and mis-matchmaking in the name of ‘social work’.

Newcomer Amrita Puri holds her own as Shefali, the behenji from ‘Bahadurganj’ who only dreams of marriage in a may-roon lehenga. She quickly becomes Aisha’s pet project. One song and a tour of Delhi’s malls and boutiques later, we have a dolled up Shefali sporting Dior and Chanel with new found class. She has some of the funniest lines in the movie and is quite refreshing.
Ira Dubey, as the witty, street-chic Pinky Bose is Aisha’s best friend. She’s got spunk that one!
Cyrus Sahukar, the poor little rich boy, hopelessly in love with our Aisha is good too and doesn’t disappoint.
Abhay Deol…hmmm….one wonders why he accepted this movie! Considering what he is capable of, this role is a wet rag.
There is also a super hot Angelina Jolie look alike…enough about her.
(I have not mentioned arun-whatshisface because he isn’t worth writing about. Sorry buddy, muscles aren’t everything!)

Lets talk about Sonam now. Does she look the part? Yes. Is she Emma? No. Austen never meant for this character to be lovable you see. She is intelligent, sophisticated and complex. But somehow, she has been ridiculously dumbed down to a bimbo from high school. The different shades to Aisha haven’t been developed enough. And she has GOT to do something about her voice. Go ask Karisma Kapoor what she did about her squeak, girl.
Her speech at the end of the movie goes completely unheard by the audience because everybody is booing at the screen by this time, as the movie just doesn’t END! Climax be damned, I was just waiting in my seat for the “Mitthi Mitthi” song.

All in all, if you attend a morning show without spending too much, with the right company and popcorn.. you will have a good time.. IF you are a girl.
Guys, steer clear and go watch inception again.

My Score- 5 ½ / 10
