Jain Temples in India

Jain temples in India are dedicated to the founder of Jainism, Lord Mahavira. These temples are lavishly built and differ from the architecture of Hindu temples. Each Jain temple has its unique personality and sentiment.

Some of the famous Jain temples of India are as follows.

  • Shri Digambar Jain Lal Mandir- Delhi

Lal Mandir is the oldest and best known Jai temple in India and is dedicated to the 23rd Tirthankara. It located in Delhi across the ancient Red Fort. The temple was constructed in 1656 with red sandstone and which is why it is popularly known as the Lal Mandir by its devotees. The temple also enshrines the statues of Lord Adinath and Lord Parasnath who succeeded Lord Mahavir. The architecture of the temple shows detailed carvings, and decorative paintwork in the ante- chambers that surround the main shrine.

Facts: This temple has undergone innumerable modifications, renovations and reconstructions and was finally enlarged in the nineteenth century.

  • Shri Parsvanath Temple- Nakoda

Nakoda is a pilgrimage built in Rajasthan where Sri Parsvanath temple is one amongst the main Jain teerth centers. The main idol is that of Lord Sri Parsvanath and is built in black stone. The temple has a very elaborate and rare example of architecture and sculptural elegance.

Facts: The idol in the temple has great magical powers. The temple was extended, renovated, rebuilt and additions were made to it. Even today the construction work is still in progress.

  • Parshwanath Digambar Jain Temple- Mumbai

Parshwanath Digambar Jain temple is a famous Jain temple situated at the Kalba Devi area of Mumbai. It is a large temple in which people from all over the country come and visit. There is huge prayer hall in the temple which is decorated and paintings of Mahavir Jain and great saints are there inside the temple.

Facts: It is considered to be one of the sacred places in Mumbai.

  • Lotus Temple- Hastinapur

In the patio of Jambudweep is a tiny temple named the Lotus temple which is also famously known as the Jain ‘House of Worship’. More than just being a temple, it also serves the very basic idea if sightseeing in Hastinapur due to its architectural built. Also may other famous Jain temples such as the Digambar Jain Baba Mandir, Kailash Parvat and Ashtapad are located in and around the town of Hastinapur.

Facts:  It is considered to be one the most significant monuments in the modern art.

  • Palitana Tirtha- Gujarat

Palitana is a Jain pilgrimage located on a hill in Gujarat with around 3500 Jain temples, of which most are built with white marble. The temples are unique in their architecture and sculpture with ornamented deities. There are a few temples which are easily notable among the rest like Adinath, Kumarpal, Sampriti Raj and Bimal Shah.

Facts:  Palitana is one of the holiest Jain places known.

  • Ranakpur Jain Temple- Ranakpur

The Jain temples of Ranakpur are certainly creditable for their architecture. This temple is wholly constructed in light colored marble. The Chamukha temple is the most important and as the term suggests, this temple is four faced. Chamukha temple is dedicated to Lord Adinath, who is the first ‘Tirthankara’ of the Jains.
Facts:  The temple of Parsavanath is another attraction that is worth visiting. Ranakpur is widely known for its marble Jain temple and is said to be one of the most spectacular Jain temples.
