It’s Football Season!

In a country as cricket crazy as India, it’s hard for any other sport to make a mark. But over the last few years there has been a respectable urban audience for sports like tennis, F-1 and the world’s favorite sport, Football. The popularity of football has gone way beyond just the World Cup. Sports fans are gladly happily lapping up the domestic Europeans football leagues in countries like England, Spain, Italy and Germany. If you have been watching cricket of late, you are sure to be disappointed in India’s performances. What better time to switch to football as of now?

Football is the most popular sport in the world by a long shot. The reason being its simplicity to understand and play. FIFA has more countries as members than the UN. That should speak volumes about the global phenomenon it is. This is a great time to get into the footy spirit as the English Premier League and the German Bundesliga have already started and the Italian Serie A and the Spanish La Liga starting in a couple of days. And this season promises to be far more exciting than the last due to the big names moving from club to club with teams like Barcelona, Real Madrid, Manchester City, Chelsea etc making a lot of player and manager signings. The EPL has already kicked off to an exciting start with a lot of goals scored and a lot of promise shown by new young players. The German League has also started off to a decent start, but not as exciting as the EPL due to demand from other clubs to sign a lot of German stars. Germany’s superstar Mezut Ozil has already signed for Madrid and a lot of other club are vying for more German players.

The Spanish league is by far the most exciting league to watch. Spain being the world champions speaks volumes about the quality of their players and football. Some of the world’s best players like Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, David Villa, Xavi, Iniesta etc are part of this league. The Italian League has faced its share of controversy in the last few years but still has some very good players like Gianluigi Buffon, Alessandro Pato, Samuel Eto’o etc.

The English League is being broadcast on ESPN- Star Sports, The Spanish League on Ten Sports, and both the German and Italian leagues on Neo Sports. Check your listings for the timetable. Hope to see you guys support your favorite team soon!
