Before you start to potty train your puppy, you should know a few things that you’ll need to keep in mind. Puppies are just like small babies and their attention span is only 15 seconds long. You should not continue the potty training sessions for more than 10 minutes. The most important thing while training your puppy is that you should never beat or shout at him/her.
Here are some tips on how to potty train your puppy: -
1. Get rid of the smell: You should make sure that there is absolutly no odor of your puppies potty mistakes inside the house or from other places of the house where you don’t want your puppy to poop. You can get a good neutralizer to get rid of the smell as dogs have a very good sense of smell and they usually go to the same place they did before to potty.
2. Do not leave your puppy unsupervised inside: Puppies are quite small and they can get into small places which will remain hidden from us such as under the chairs, tables, couches etc. Always keep an eye on your puppy when inside the house or at places where you do not want him to make potty.
3. Potty signs: You should watch your puppy and notice his potty signs. Puppies generally do some things right before they want to make potty such as scratching the floor, smelling the floor attentively, start walking in a weird way or they might bark or keep sitting down . If you see your dog doing such things or if you notice the signs, you should take your dog outside immidiately. Make sure that you praise them and give them a treat if they go to the bathroom outside. This will let you puppy know that he has done something good but if he/she makes a potty mistake inside the house let him know that you are angry at him but do not ever beat or shout at him. You firmly say “No, Bad Dog” and keep them outside the house for a bit.
4. Keep an eye on the time: Puppies have quite a week bladder control and can only hold it in for 30 minutes. Every thirty minutes you are going to need to check if they are showing the signs. But it is still safer to take them out every 30 minutes.
