How to Cook Rice with Perfection

Rice is one of the staple foods in India. There are wide array of rice available, white rice, brown rice, short rice, long rice, basmati rice etc. Rice can be cooked in various methods and techniques. Rice is one the easiest and fastest cooking food item, but cooking perfectly is what counted. Perfect cooked rice means one which is non- sticky, holds individuality, soft but not soggy and most importantly which has a wonderful aroma.


Following are the tips that will ensure you cook a good pot of rice every time:

Cooking rice in Pan:

If you are planning to cook the rice in a pan then choose a heavy-bottomed saucepan which has a tight fitting lid. The amount of rice should not fill more than 1/4th of the pan. Use plenty of water and always stir it in circular manner. The water will start looking opaque .Repeatedly rinse the water till the water appears a bit clear. Drain the rice in a sieve before putting it in the pan. Normally the rice is boiled first without the lid. Stir the rice several times to ensure it is cooked evenly. Lower the heat to medium and stir again, till the water is absorbed to certain level but not completely. Reduce the flame to low, cover it and cook for 10 minutes. Turn off the heat and keep aside for 10 minutes, till it settles down and firms up. The rice is ready to serve. The total cooking time is 30 minutes.

Cooking Rice in Cooker:

Cooker is the most common utensil used for cooking rice. The ratio for cooking the rice in the cooker is always 1 cup of rice to 1.5 cups of water. If you want to add salt, then put ¼ tsp per 1 cup uncooked rice. Pour 1 cup of water into the bottom of the pressure cooker. Place the rice vessel inside the cooker, close the lid. Generally cook it for 3 whistles. Allow the pressure to reduce and then open the cooker. Do not open the cooker immediately after the whistles.

Cooking Rice in microwave:

Mix the rice and water in a microwave safe container, the ratio is same as mentioned for cooker. Make sure the container is large enough, so that the rice has space when it expands. The container should be at least 4 times larger than combined volume of rice and water. Add salt and vegetable oil before cooking. Stir the rice slowly. Cover the rice, place it in the microwave and set the timer according to your microwave settings. Let the rice settle down in the microwave for 5 minutes. The steam will complete the process. Fluff the rice with a fork and serve.

Tips to remember while cooking rice:

  • Add a tablespoon of oil to the water while cooking the rice. It allows the grains stay individual and don’t stick together.
  • Accurately measure the amount of rice and water
  • Never stir the rice while cooking, it will break the rice grains and make them gummy.
  • You can also add few drops of lemon juice to make the rice remain separate and stay bright white.
  • If you are cooking old rice or basmati rice then soak the rice in water for at least 30 minutes before cooking, this will make the grain less brittle and protect it from breaking.

Cooking rice is the most basic kitchen task, yet it badgers many cooks. By following the above tips you can accomplish the task of cooking perfect rice.
