How to build your own raft

A raft is a flat structure that is used as support for transportation over water. Rafts are usually kept afloat by using any combination of buoyant materials such as wood, sealed barrels, or inflated air chambers. Previously rafts were constructed of wood or reeds. But now there are rafts which are made using pontoons, drums or extruded polystyrene blocks. Inflatable rafts are durable, multi- layered rubberized fabrics. Depending on its usage and size, its structure may vary. Nowadays, we prefer on making our own rafts as per specifications and then set out on an adventurous ride. Here you’ll come across five easy steps to craft your own raft ready for launching with just few hours of work.

  • Acquire the materials such as dimension lumber or dried log pipes that would be required to design your raft.
  •  The pipes are attached by drilling by drilling through each pipe near the end and then securing it with large bolts to the wooden frame.
  •  Seal the holes with caulk and then plug the ends with homemade wooden discs.
  •  In order to obtain the true speed of this raft, you will need to set up an oarlock system.
  •  Since, the design is extremely stable you can easily go rafting.
