Home remedies for Sore Throat

Sore throat is quite a common problem with all the unhealthy eating and drinking habits in today’s life. It is itchy and swollen and if you swallow anything it hurts and the pain is not avoidable. But it is not a very serious problem unless you get it abnormally frequently. Sore is throat is technically a swelling of the pharynx (Tube that is located in the back of the mouth and it is extended to the esophagus). There are two main causes of Sore throat; viral infections and bacterial infection.

  • Viral infection – The sore throat caused by a viral infection such as cold or flu is generally accompanied by fever, runny nose and tiredness. The symptoms of this type of infection can be cured within a few days.
  • Bacterial infection – The Sore throat caused by bacterial infection has the same symptoms of viral infections but the damages could be quite severe to the kidney or the heart, if left untreated.

Here are some other reasons behind sore throat:

  • Dry air ( sleeping with your mouth open)
  • Food and other types of allergies
  • Smoking
  • Mouth breathing
  • Singing, coughing or shouting
  • Polyps or cancer
  • Infected tonsils
  • Acid reflux

If you have had a sore throat for more than two days it is best to see a doctor. Mild sore throats can also be treated at home. Here are the steps for curing sore throat at home (home remedies for sore throat).

Eating and drinking:
1. Drink lots of water. Make sure that the water is warm or if possible drink the water as hot as you can tolerate.

2. Avoid any cold drinks or soft drinks. This will cause more pain for your sore throat (No chilled alcoholic drinks)

3. Hot drinks and soup – hot drinks and soups will ease the pain by creating fluids. Here are some hot drinks to help you get rid of sore throat at home.

  • Lemon juice
  • Lemon tea with honey
  • Ginger and lemon juice
  • Hot milk and turmeric
  • Hot rum and honey
  • Hot ginger tea

4. Gargle warm salt water with a few drops of lemon 4 to 5 time a day. Make sure you do this before bed too.

5. Drink hot orange juice and apple juice. Do not heat them too much as they should be just warm enough.

6. Do not drink any dairy products while you have a sore throat or cough.

7. Do not eat cold food or something that’s too sweet

Activities
1. Do not hold your cough inside, do it if you feel like it, even if it hurts

2. Take hot showers.

3. If you feel better, try to stay upright if you are not sleeping.

4. Take a lot of rest until you are completely fine.

5. It is better to use a humidifier.

You should keep in mind that if your sore throat continues for more that 2 to 3 days you should see a doctor.
