Google Nexus 7 on sale in India

Nexus 7, the tablet computer designed and developed by Google in conjunction with Asus has finally reached the Indian store shelves on November 8, priced at Rs. 19,990. Asus confirmed that sale of the tablet would begin today, with an entry level Nexus 7 with 16GB storage. So far Asus has not provided details on the availability of 32GB version of Nexus 7 in India.

The Nexus 7 has received rave reviews by tech critics across the board for punching well above its relatively cheap pricetag, and was also named ‘gadget of the year’ at London’s T3 Gadget Awards 2012. Asus claimed it was selling nearly one million Nexus 7 tablets per month.

However the pricing of the device feels a little steep considering the fact that the Nexus 7 tablet is priced at $199 (Rs. 11,339 approx.) for the 16GB variant and $249 (Rs. 14,188) for the 32GB variant in the US.

Specifications of the tablet include a 7-inch screen with IPS (in-plane switching) screen with a resolution of 1,280×800 pixels. Unlike other Android tablets it runs the non-modified version of Android 4.1 – also called Jelly Bean.

The tablet is also the first 7-inch to house a 1.3GHz Nvidia Tegra 3 quad-core CPU, which includes a 12-core GPU. It also has a Micro-USB port, 1GB of RAM, and a 1.2-megapixel front camera (no back camera included).

Research says:

However, despite the success of Nexus 7 and a few other Android tablets like Amazon’s Kindle Fire and Samsung’s Galaxy Tabs, iPad continues to have the lion’s share in market. Research firm IDC revealed that Apple has over 50% share in the tablet market.

And recently, a comprehensive test carried out by Dr. Raymond Soneira of DisplayMate has said that the display of the Nexus 7 comprehensively outperformed Apple’s newly launched iPad mini which is priced at Rs 27,000 for an entry level device.
