Ganeshotsav from the History

Believers of Lord Ganesha celebrate the 10-day festival with enthusiasm and energy showing their love and respect for the lord Ganesha. Almost each and every house in Maharashtra celebrate this festival by establishing a Ganesh Idol in their houses and decorating houses with lights, flowers and other decorative accessories.

Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated from the ancient history but the exact roots of the festival were never revealed. The earliest celebration of the Ganesh Chaturthi can be trace back to the Satavahana, Rashtrakuta and Chalukya dynasties but they were more reigns oriented then. The records from the history reveal that the actual celebration of Ganesha Chaturthi was started by the Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in his power to promote the Marathi culture and nationalism. The day Shivaji Maharaj Started the celebration of Ganesh Chaturthi he created a huge cultural event to follow on for the Marathi people. The celebration from the Shivaji Maharaj’s power continued for the years and it also found some references in the Peshwa times. The Peshwas were the hard core devotee of the Lord Ganesh as it was their family deity. But as the Peshwa rule ended, Ganesh Chaturthi remained a family affair to celebrate in the Maharashtriyan culture.                    

Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav
Increasing sound of Dhol-Tasha Pathaks practicing in every possible corner of the city is giving the glimpse of the environment they create during the celebration of Ganeshotsav. The huge and elegant Ganesh Idols and huge sets of Decorations create an image of well known Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav from the Pune and Mumbai cities. Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav creates a huge platform for the devotee to enjoy the festival with enthusiasm and energy. The ganeshotsav which we celebrate now-a-days is an epitome of all the celebrations from India defining culture and heritage of the country.                

Idea behind
It was Lokamanya Tilak, who brought back the traditional celebration of Ganesh Chaturthi in India with an idea to bring out the people from their houses and educate them to take participation in the Freedom fight against the British rule. The Lokamanya Tilak found that the people, especially from Maharashtra are hardcore devotees of the Lord Ganesha. Lord Ganesha was worshipped in all segments of the country; Tilak realized the cultural importance of the Lord Ganesha and popularized Ganesh Chaturthi on a vast scale making it a national festival. This was the time when India was divided in too parts one with Brahmins and Non-Brahmins, hence the Ganeshotsav’s idea was to reduce the gap between them. To fight against the British rule it was necessary to bring people together hence the Idea of creating a Sarvajanik festival came up in British rule.

Current Scenario
Currently Ganeshotsav is celebrated in various parts of the country and especially in Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu states. The Pune city is the birthplace of the Gaesha festival which is now famous across the world. The Ganesh Festival is celebrated on the large scale in India. Mumbai and Pune’s Ganesh Festival celebration is world famous.
