Defense: A rising career option for women

In a male dominated country like India, women have a number of restrictions when it comes to choosing a career. Teaching, medicine, banks, etc. are the most common fields that women of our country choose. Jobs in the Indian Army:

Women candidates can apply for the 49 weeks training at the Officers Training Academy, Chennai. Unmarried women between the age group of 19-25 years are eligible to apply for this course. These women candidates have to give a written entrance exam (CDSE). Candidates who clear this exam have to go through a 5-days interview programme which is conducted and scheduled by the Service Selection Board (SSB). The final step is to clear the medical tests. Once all this is successfully cleared, the candidates commence with their 49 weeks training at OTA, Chennai. The 5 entry schemes for women to get recruited in the Indian Army are:

1. Graduate UPSC Entry.

2. Engineer Entry.

3. Law Entry.

4. Post Graduate Entry.

5. NCC Entry.

Women after completing the 49 weeks training are recruited for jobs in various branches of the Indian Army: Ordnance, Distribution, Technical, Educational, Logistics, Administration Branch and so on.

Jobs in the Indian Air Force:

The Indian Air Force offers jobs for women in Flying Branch, Technical Branch and Ground Duty Branch. The selection process of the Indian Air Force is same as the process in the Indian Army. The candidates have to appear for the Air Force Common Admission Test (AFCAT) or for the CDSE. The entry schemes for women in the Indian Air Force are same as the Indian Army. The selected candidates undergo a training programme at the Air Force Academy, Dundigal.

Jobs in the Indian Navy:

Women can work in the following branches of the Indian Navy:

1. ATC.

2. Law.

3. Logistics.

4. Education.

5. Observer.

6. Naval Architecture.

The women candidates have to appear for the written CDSE exam. The process of SSB interviews and medical tests is then followed. The selected navy candidates undergo the training programme at Ezhimala, Kerala.
