To be eligible to pursue career in this industry preferably you should have an undergraduate/ postgraduate degree, diploma or certificate course in the same. Some of the famous institutes which provide this course are The India Institute of Tourism and Travel Management, International Air Transport Association (IATA) etc. You should also have an appealing and smart personality, decent communication skills, quick witted and self-confidence, since you will be dealing with lot of unknown people.

Tourism department offers you a wide range of career options which includes government jobs, immigration and customs services, travel agencies, airlines, tour operators, hotels, airline catering, laundry services, Guides, Interpreters, Tourism sales and promoter, etc. Thus it provides you career opportunities in both public and private sector. In public sector you can go for posts like Officers, Tourist guides, information assistants etc. in the Directorates and Departments of Tourism centre. Whereas in private sector you can opt for travel agencies, tour operators, airlines, hotels, transport and cargo companies etc. You can also set-up your own business in this industry by simply offering a 360 degree management of all travel requirements of a client.

Under Tourism Department higher post jobs such as that of Officers in Directorate and Departments of Tourism are selected through Civil/Administrative services of State and Central Government. Competitive Examinations are held by Staff Selection commission for the selection of Information Assistants in Tourism Department.To be an information assistantyou must have a graduation degree along with proper knowledge of art and architecture, Indian History and English.

Under Airlines, you can either work as a part of ground staff or in flight. Various options available are: Traffic Assistance, Reservation and Counter Staff, Airhostess and flight pursers, Sales and Marketing staff and customer services. Airlines like Air India, Indian Railways, Jet Airways, Air Sahara etc. offer such job opportunities with fat salary packages.

Tour Operators are responsible for organizing and managing the entire tours for the clients from providing them travel conveyance and taking them to various spots to their food and beverage arrangement.

Travel Agencies appoint travel agents who act as a guide to the tourists and help them sort out all travel requirements.
