Career in film-making

Films are a blend of technology and creativity. It is a process of giving life to a script by proper direction to reach the audience. We as spectators watch what we are made to watch. It is the vision of the film maker shot by a camera. Making films is exciting but it’s not an easy task. There is long hours of shooting and then the lengthy process of post-production.  If you are ready for these, you can opt for it. Making a film is not a one man’s job. There are various people involved like Director, Cameraperson, Director of Photography, Art Director, Scriptwriter, Editor, Actors and many others like gaffer, best boy, dolly grip etc. From its conception to the finished product, a film involves a lot of efforts. If you are looking for a career in film making, you can be any one of the following:

Director: A director is a person who visualises the story and controls its dramatic and artistic aspects. He has to determine sound, action, lighting, casting and even editing. There is Assistant Director to help the Director in his job.  The Assistant Director has to maintain discipline on the set, keep the production team going with the schedule etc.

Art Director: He is responsible for the “look” and “feel” of the film.

Director of Photography: Also called Cinematographer and DoP, he is responsible for camera placement, camera movement and lighting.

Cameraperson: The cameraperson operates the film camera. In some cases he is called  cinematographer also. It is his job to shoot films as told by the Director.

Scriptwriter: Films are based on the story written by scriptwriters. All you need to have good story-telling abilities and boundless creativity.

Editor: The final finished motion film is prepared by the editor. His job is to select shots and make a proper sequence. You should have the technical knowledge of different software which are used to edit films.

Audiographer: A film is incomplete without sound. So, an audiographer’s job includes sound recording, mixing, and editing.

Actor: As everyone knows, actors give a form to the characters written in the script. They ‘interpret’ them and present them on the screen.

There are various colleges in India which offer courses in film making. You can opt for them after completing your school or after your college. Few of the famous colleges are:

  • Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune offers courses in cinematography, film direction, editing and audiography.
  • Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute (SRFTI), Kolkata, offers courses in film direction, sound recording, editing and motion picture photography.
  • Symbiosis Institute of Media and Communication offers courses in film making both at the under-graduation as well as post-graduation level.
  • Barry John Acting Studio, Mumbai offers acting courses.
  • Whistling Woods International, Mumbai offers courses in acting, cinematography, direction, and editing.
